Corrected Calcium
Adjusts total serum calcium for hypoalbuminemia using the Payne correction formula.
Used when serum albumin is below 4.0 g/dL to unmask true calcium status — total calcium is falsely low in hypoalbuminaemia, and corrected calcium helps identify occult hypercalcaemia or true normocalcaemia in critically ill patients.
| Corrected Ca | Status | Clinical Action |
|---|---|---|
| < 8.5 mg/dL | Hypocalcaemia | Assess for symptoms; consider IV/oral calcium, check Mg & PTH |
| 8.5 – 10.5 mg/dL | Normocalcaemia | No calcium-specific intervention required |
| > 10.5 mg/dL | Hypercalcaemia | Investigate cause; consider hydration, bisphosphonates, calcitonin |
Reference ranges are for adults using mg/dL units. In mmol/L: hypocalcaemia <2.12, normal 2.12–2.62, hypercalcaemia >2.62.
This calculator is provided for educational and informational purposes only. The Payne correction formula is an estimate and should not replace ionised calcium measurement in critically ill patients. Always interpret results within the full clinical context and consult a qualified clinician before making treatment decisions.
